Healthy Restaurant Initiative

The Healthy Restaurant Initiative started as a collaboration between Ramiro Rubio, owner of Galerias, Sea Mar CHC, and Seattle & King County REACH. Ramiro initiated this project with the goals of creating healthier menu options at his restaurant, raising awareness about diabetes in the Latino community, and eventually spreading this model to other Mexican restaurant owners in King County. The model would create opportunities for owners to make changes in their restaurant with the support of a nutritionist, health educator, and technical support staff.

Increase access to healthy foods

Fueled by the interest and commitment of the community, Sea Mar Community Health Centers, the South Park Community Center, Marra Farm/Lettuce Link, and the Department of Neighborhoods partnered to bring a free Community Kitchen to the South Park Community Center. The South Park Community Kitchen model focuses on food access, providing an environment for learning about health meals in a culturally sensitive manner, creating meals using locally grown fresh produce, and helps build community cohesion.
